Four Lines of Thought
On the completion of my honours year at the end of 2009 at NAS I was fortunate enough to be one of four students to win a place in the Australian Galleries National Art School Award Exhibition. This show opened in February 2011 and was entitled Four Lines of Thought. This is the new work I created for this show.
Empty Spaces, Discarded Objects
For my final year in printmaking at the National Art School I worked on a series of mezzotint prints focussing on spaces in my home. Choosing places and objects of significance to me, I used these familiar areas to explore some ideas about how we experience the domestic — evoking feelings of shelter and nurture, but also other more ambivalent responses.
Mezzotint is a lovely (if demanding) medium. It offers rich, velvety blacks, great tonal variation and wonderful chiaroscuro effects. The way the plate is worked in the mezzotint process — from dark to light with the image slowly emerging through careful scraping and burnishing — became a reflection of how I hope these prints may be experienced, as objects and spaces materialising from shadow, dream or memory.
