As humans with a desire to survive there are two options open to us, to change our environment or to adapt our behaviour to suit the environment (Porter 1980). The first option involves technology and by extension technological change. The different societies, or social environments, that exist or have existed have always had some combination of the two options and the Western social environment has adopted the first option strongly over the second.none
